West European Tanker Reporting System to become effective 1 July 2005

Following the adoption at the IMO of the Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) in Western Europe, the first associated protective measure enters into force on 1 July 2005. This protective measure is implemented in the form of a mandatory reporting system for tankers known as the West European Tanker Reporting System (WETREP).

All tankers of over 600 tonnes deadweight and carrying a cargo of heavy crude oil, heavy fuel oil, bitumen or tar will have to complete and submit the form as provided in the IMO circular SN/Circ.242. Full details of the Reporting Area are also provided in the circular together with clear guidance on when such reports should be transmitted.
