IMO-led Marine Electronic Highway Project progresses

The IMO-led initiative of the Marine Electronic Highway (MEH) for the Straits of Malacca and Singapore is a step closer to implementation. The MEH project has been under discussion by the three littoral states for a number of years, with little progress. INTERTANKO, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and others have supported the project as being a positive step in improving navigational safety in the region and thereby safeguarding the marine environment.

During the next meeting of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (18-22 July 2005) it is planned that the littoral states will sign a Memorandum of Understanding for the project. By the end of July 2005 it is hoped that the procurement plan and bid documents will be submitted to the World Bank, which will partly finance the project. If all goes to plan the World Bank’s board of directors will approve the plan at their meeting in September. Members will be kept advised of developments.
