ABS new Guidance Notes on the inspection, Maintenance and Application of Marine Coating Systems

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has issued a Press Release stating that it has issued a completely revised and expanded edition of its Guidance Notes on Inspection, Maintenance and Application of Marine Coatings. This will assist shipbuilders, ship owners and operators in preparing for the new IMO mandated Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC) (IMO MSC) 215(82). The IMO Standard takes effect on 1 July 2008.

The guidance provided by ABS covers both the technical requirements of the new regulations and the role coatings play in contributing to the longevity of the structure. They also take into account the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Procedural Requirement (PR34) that specifically addresses the application of the new IMO Standard.

Please note that there is also a joint industry effort, coordinated by IACS, to develop an industry guide for the practical application of the IMO PSPC. This guide is at the final draft stage. When concluded, it too will be circulated to members.
