High density fuels in New York
Over the past two weeks, DNV Petroleum Services has analysed several residual fuel oil samples from the port of New York, which exceeded the ISO 8217:1996 density specification of maximum 991.0 kg/m3. The highest density value of the subject samples was 1005.1 kg/m3 and the average density value was 999.9 kg/m3. Not surprisingly, these fuels also had CCAI values ranging from 862 to 881.

Over the past two weeks, DNV Petroleum Services has analysed a number of residual fuel oil samples from the port of Los Angeles, which exceeded the ISO 8217:1996 density specification of maximum 991.0 kg/m3. The highest density value of the subject samples was 993.4 kg/m3 and the average density value was 992.2 kg/m3.

Catalytic fines content (Al + Si) in the samples, although within specification, averaged 35 ppm. At this level, efficient centrifuging is required to prepare the fuel for engine operation.

For optimum removal of catalytic fines with conventional centrifuges, it is recommended that the unit(s) be operated as clarifier(s) – in parallel if more than one unit is available, and at minimum flow rate.

Over the past two weeks, half of all residual fuel oil samples from Lisbon that DNV Petroleum Services had analysed were found to exceed the ISO 8217: 1996 maximum density specification of 991.0 kg/m3. The highest density value of the subject samples was 993.0 kg/m3 and the average density value was 992.2 kg/m3.

Catalytic fines content (Al+Si) in the samples, although within specification, averaged 33 ppm. At this level, efficient centrifuging is required to prepare the fuel for engine operation.

For optimum removal of catalytic fines with conventional centrifuges, it is recommended that the unit(s) be operated as clarifier(s) – in parallel, if more than one unit is available, and at minimum flow rate.
