IACS Guidelines for Coating Maintenance and Repairs

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has released its Guidelines for Coating Maintenance and Repairs for Ballast Tanks and Combined Cargo/Ballast Tanks on Oil Tankers – IACS Recommendation 87- developed together with the Round Table of international shipping associations (Rtisa) and the Oil Companies’ International Marine Forum (OCIMF).

The guidelines aim to assist surveyors, owners, shipyards, flag administrations and other interested parties involved in the survey, assessment and repair of coatings in ballast tanks and combined cargo/ballast tanks on oil tankers.

The motivation for developing these guidelines is the revision of the IACS UR Z10.1 (Enhanced Surveys for Single Hull Tankers), which indicates that coating found in less than good condition should be repaired or maintained in order to avoid an annual survey. These Guidelines provide a clear definition of good coating condition and explain how to restore from fair and/or poor conditions to good.
