IMO releases Unified Interpretations to Means of Access

The IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) has adopted a new SOLAS regulation (SOLAS regulation II-1/3-6) for mandatory Means of Access in new oil tankers and new bulk carriers (building contract from 1 January 2006) in order to facilitate inspection of ships’ structures.

In addition, at its recent session in May 2005, MSC had approved Unified Interpretations of the provisions of SOLAS regulation II-1/3-6 and also the Technical Provisions for means of access for inspections (resolution MSC.158(78)). The Unified Interpretation will assist Flag Administrations and Class Societies to have an uniform approach for the application of these new provisions.
