INTERTANKO Paper at the UK Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA)

INTERTANKO's Technical Director, Dragos Rauta's paper on 'Corrosion Protection on Double Hull Tankers' was a key part of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects' (RINA)  Conference on Double Hull Tankers, which was held on 25-26 February 2004 in London. While the conference aimed to address the peculiarities of new double hull designs and the tanker operators' actual experience, the INTERTANKO paper addressed the specific challenges set by the double hull structure with respect to corrosion prevention, what should be done, and what should be the roles of the different stakeholders.

In brief, the message was: since corrosion prevention measures are expensive mandatory requirements, there is a need to ensure professional control of coating selection and application.  Guarantees need absolutely to be given to the customer who pays for this expensive work.

Moreover, the paper suggested that there should be more research to understand better the sources of corrosion, particularly in oil cargo tanks, with an emphasis on assessing the adequacy of the paint used.

A copy of the presentation (text and PowerPoint presentation) is available on the INTERTANKO web site
