INTERTANKO STEPS IN TO CHAIR THE LATEST MEETING OF THE MTSCNAC

The Secretary of Transportation's National Advisory Council on the Marine Transportation System (MTSNAC) met in Long Beach, California on 13 and 14 August. Because of a last-minute schedule conflict resulting in the non-availability of both the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman of MTSNAC, one of INTERTANKO’s Representatives on the MTSNAC, Jonathan Benner, was asked to step in and serve as chairman.

The MTSNAC was established by former Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater as a result of growing awareness in the United States that the future economic growth of the national and international economy required new initiatives to improve maritime infrastructure. A key component of the MTSNAC programme was attention to safe navigation in the approaches to US harbours and terminals. This emphasis was a direct offshoot of INTERTANKO's 1996 Discussion Paper on Port and Terminal Safety.

Current Secretary Norman Mineta has continued his predecessor's strong support for the work of the Council. US Government sponsors of MTSNAC include the US Maritime Administration (MARAD), the Coast Guard, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
