INTERTANKO endorses the IMO initiative on goal-based standards at EMSA technical meeting

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) organised a workshop on 26 October 2004 in Brussels. Its aim was to offer all European Union (EU) MemberStates and Acceding Countries a forum at which technical information relating to the development of “goal based standards” at IMO and the new IACS (International Association of Classification Societies) common rules for bulk carriers and tankers could be presented and discussed.

INTERTANKO was invited to give a presentation, which can be viewed here. Other presentations were given by flag state administrations (Greece and the Bahamas), IMO, IACS, CESA (Community of European Shipyards' Associations) and Det Norske Veritas.

From the INTERTANKO point of view, the seminar was useful to the extent that we could provide clarifications and clear statements on our members’ expectations of this regulatory process, which aims to result in more robust and resilient ships.
