INTERTANKO opposes California new tug escort regulations

Although industry, the San Francisco Harbour Safety Committee and even the Office of Oil Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) within the California Department of Fish and Game opposed it, Senate Bill 1480 requesting tug escorts in the San Francisco Bay for tankers carrying hazardous material (definition given in the Bill is ‘‘Hazardous material’’ includes, but is not limited to, anhydrous ammonia, ammonium nitrate, and liquefied gas) has been passed and sent to Governor Schwarzenegger to be signed into law.

INTERTANKO and many other industry representatives have sent letters urging the Governor not to sign the bill. Click here to download the INTERTANKO letter.

The Bill was introduced by the Democratic Senator Brian Sher, an icon in the State legislature who is soon retiring as a result of term limits. The Senate Bill (SB) 1480, as submitted to the Governor, can be accessed at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/bill/sen/sb_1451-1500/sb_1480_bill_20040826_enrolled.pdf
