INTERTANKO sponsoring the NACE new International Marine Coatings Forum

The new IMO Performance Standard for Protective Coatings for dedicated seawater ballast tanks in all type of ships and double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers (PSPC) mandates that professional coating inspectors should inspect whether the standard is appropriately applied. The minimum qualifications required for coating inspectors should correspond to NACE Coating Inspector Level 2 (National Association of Corrosion Engineers) and FROSIO Inspector Level III (the Norwegian Professional Council for Education and Certification of Inspectors of Surface Treatment.

In order to ensure proper enforcement of the PSPC, there will need to be sufficient coating inspectors possessing these qualifications who are also familiar with ships and maritime operations. Therefore, in response to a call from NACE International (National Association of Corrosion Engineers), INTERTANKO has agreed to participate and support the creation of a NACE Marine Coating Forum. The initiative has also had good support from shipbuilders, ship owners and class societies who participated in a panel debate to examine the significant issues currently faced by marine coatings personnel responsible for the successful specification, implementation, and maintenance of marine coating systems. The issues addressed concerned the PSPC specifications but also fouling control and infestation by invasive species. The forum explored a path for a successful industry response to these issues, including current and future training requirements.

The Forum, whose President is Hiroshi (Dave) Iwamoto, Chairman, Committee for Expertise of Shipbuilding Specifics (CESS), was held on last week in Nashville, Tennessee. The proceedings were chaired by Andrew Alderson, Managing Director, RINA UK, Ltd. (IACS) and was attended by the following panellists:
