INTERTANKO’s US office has moved to new premises in the Washington, D.C. area and will expand its US presence and activities following the appointment of Dragos Rauta, INTERTANKO’s Technical Director as the new INTERTANKO US Representative .

Mr. Rauta has been with INTERTANKO since 1990. He was trained as a Naval Architect and has been active in representing INTERTANKO members’ interests on technical issues before the International Maritime Organisation. He is responsible for all technical issues of the work of the INTERTANKO Safety, Technical and Environmental Committee (ISTEC) and the coordination of activities of the Technical and Marine & Environmental sections. His previous experience is from ship design and model testing, as well as management experience from shipbuilding and shipyard administration.

INTERTANKO’s programme in the United States has evolved from a ‘crisis reaction’ enterprise in the early 1990s to a mature, ongoing programme where technical issues related to vessel design and function play an increasing role. The addition of Dragos Rauta to our existing US capabilities on the legal and regulatory side will expand the range of issues that we can address in detail on a day-to-day basis. We are particularly interested in expanding our range of daily contacts with the United States Coast Guard and other relevant US agencies on technical issues that affect not only US Port State Control issues, but that also frequently migrate to consideration in Europe, Asia and before the IMO.

While recent INTERTANKO activity has been dominated by events in Europe, the United States remains the focus of considerable attention. INTERTANKO is committed to promoting improvements in the maritime infrastructure of the United States and in the development of sound regulatory measures for tankers.

Mr. Rauta will also have responsibility for monitoring the membership in the North American Continent and Secretary to the North American Panel (NAP).

INTERTANKO’s US legal interests will continue to be overseen by Jonathan Benner, who has represented INTERTANKO in Washington since 1991.

In addition to the posting of Mr. Rauta to the Washington area, INTERTANKO has relocated its US offices to Arlington, Virginia. The new offices are co-located with the American Waterways Operators and are convenient to downtown Washington, D.C. INTERTANKO’s relationship with AWO has been a constructive one for many years. The opportunity to expand our facilities through arrangements with AWO is a continuation of a close working relationship in both organisations’ efforts to promote safe marine transport.

The new offices opened on 11 February and are situated at 801 North Quincy Street, Suite 200,Arlington, 22203 Virginia.  tel. +1 703 373 2269
