The INTERTANKO Technical, Safety and Environmental Committee (ISTEC) held its 21st meeting last week. The meeting addressed an extensive agenda since ISTEC is involved in a number of high priority issues not only concerning tankers but also the shipping industry in general.

23 people, members, secretariat and guests attended the meeting. Dr. Tor Svensen, Vice President/Technical Director of DNV Maritime, and Mr. Robert Frankland, International Marine Transportation Ltd (IMT)/ExxonMobil, were among the participants. The former gave a presentation on the DNV activities with regard to new and harmonised regulations within IACS for minimum structural standards of newbuildings. The latter explained IMT’s policy of assessment of the standards of ships in service through their vetting process. The agenda addressed i.a. issues such as pilotage, the ISM Code, safety of lifeboat operations, emissions from ships and emissions trading, VOC emissions and methods to limit and contain them, the latest problems with the operation of the oil discharge monitoring equipment and possible corrective actions, etc. A report on the outcome of the meeting can be viewed here.

The meeting was a success due to the dedication of all those present, who not only worked for the almost two days of the formal meetings but also after hours. The Secretariat would like to express its appreciation to each of the attendees as well as to our guests for their contribution to the success of the meeting.
