MSC 81 - Performance Standard for Protective Coatings for Seawater Ballast Tanks approved by IMO

The 81st session of the IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 81) has finalised and approved amendments to the SOLAS regulations II-1/3-2 and XII/6.3 that mandate a Performance Standard for Protective Coatings for Dedicated Seawater Ballast Tanks in All Types of Ships and Double-Side Skin Spaces of Bulk Carriers. Click here for a copy of the final draft of the provisional text of amended SOLAS II-1/3-2, and click here for a copy of the final draft of the Performance Standard for Protective Coatings.

According to the IMO procedures, the approved texts will be adopted by MSC 82 in December 2006. The new performance standard for coating application will be mandated on ships with a building contract on and after 1 July 2008 and with a delivery date on and after 1 July 2012.

INTERTANKO would have wished for a faster phase-in of the standard but, taking into account that it will apply to ballast tanks of ALL ship types, the IMO agreed to provide a more flexible phase-in period.

As far as the standard itself is concerned, INTERTANKO was a very active driving force in developing its definition, and considers the result as solid and close to our expectations.
