MSC 82 - Adoption of Performance Standard for Protective Coatings for Seawater Ballast Tanks

The 82nd session of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO's) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 82) has approved amendments to the SOLAS regulations II-1/3-2 and XII/6.3 that mandate a Performance Standard for Protective Coatings for Dedicated Seawater Ballast Tanks in All Types of Ships and Double-Side Skin Spaces of Bulk Carriers. The new performance standard for coating application will be mandated on ships not less than 500 GT with a building contract on or after 1 July 2008 and with a delivery date on or after 1 July 2012.

"Clean" copies of the final draft of the provisional text of amended SOLAS II-1/3-2 and of the final draft of the Performance Standard for Protective Coatings will be provided next week, or as soon as released by the IMO. As far as the standard itself is concerned, INTERTANKO was an active driving force in developing its definition, and considers the result to be solid and close to its expectations.
