MSC 83 - SOLAS Regulation 5-1 - Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

The 83rd session of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee finally adopted an amendment to Chapter VI of SOLAS, including a new regulation 5-1, which requires that as from 1 July 2009, ships carrying MARPOL Annex I cargoes and marine fuel oils shall be provided with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) prior to loading such cargoes/bunkers. The standard MSDS format is given in Resolution MSC.150(77).

This final adoption is a positive outcome for an issue which INTERTANKO initiated some 6 or 7 years ago. The standard format for the MSDS in MSC 150(77) will be finalised at the next session of the Bulk Liquid and Gases Sub-committee meeting in February 2008.

INTERTANKO will also consider whether any further action is required with regard to how this new regulation will be enforced, particularly what action the ship should take if an MSDS is not provided or, when provided, if it is not in compliance with the standard format.
