Standards for the exchange of structural design data for hull cross section approval

The Marine e-Business Standard Association (EMSA) has issued a standard format (EMSA Protocol eP 001) which supports the electronic exchange of ship hull data. This provides the shipbuilding industry with International Standards for the exchange of ship hull data.

This data covers the moulded form, arrangements and the structures. The eP 001 is based on the ISO neutral data exchange standard STEP AP218 Ship Structures. These standards will help the industry communicate faster and more accurately with ship builders, suppliers, classification societies, designers and anyone else who needs to work with detailed ship design and manufacturing data.

According to EMSA, the implementation of these standards is already underway both in Europe and in the US, and some companies have already announced a commercial data exchange capability.
