Third biggest Singapore bunker supplier suspended

Singapore’s third biggest bunker supplier, Hai Soon Diesel & Trading Pte Ltd, has had its trading licences suspended by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) after company director pleaded guilty to a bribery charge.

The company had announced earlier this month it had stopped selling bunkers in Singapore due to unsustainably low margins.

The Director was charged with bribing the chief engineer of a vessel to overlook a deliberate under-supply of bunker fuel by his company in Singapore on 17 May 2001. He said the conviction incident was a “one off” mistake. The company’s decision to exit bunker supplying in Singapore was “unrelated” to the conviction.

Asked if the company would be able to be re-licensed should it return to the industry at a later stage, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said thatall applications were “reviewed and considered carefully”. “The MPA will not hesitate to reject any applicant that it believes is unable to meet with the terms and conditions of the licence,” a spokesman said.
