INTERTANKO Publications

INTERTANKO has issued a large number of guidelines and commentaries over the years and 2005 was no exception with the publication of the 6th Edition of ’A Guide to the Vetting Process’ and a ’Commentary of SHELLVOY 6’.

A Guide to the Vetting Process (6th edition) - Published 2005
INTERTANKO handles many enquiries for up-to-date information on the different ship inspection systems carried out by oil companies, port state control authorities, insurers, underwriters and other bodies. Such inspections form an essential part of the tanker vetting process.

To overcome the lack of available information on vetting inspection systems, and to assist tanker crews and onshore personnel, INTERTANKO has published ’A Guide to the Vetting Process’. The publication provides a concise, yet comprehensive description of the principal tanker vetting systems. INTERTANKO recommends that this revised and expanded edition is a MUST onboard each vessel and in shore offices to assist tanker crews and personnel ashore to better understand, and to be better prepared for, vetting inspections.

Commentary on SHELLVOY 6 - Published 2005
On 16 March 2005 Shell launched Shellvoy 6, its updated form of tanker voyage charterparty. Its stated intention is to include in the new form all current amendments issued since 1987 and to "clarify standard interpretations and practice." Shell issued the new form together with an explanatory note and its standard template for recaps (both charter in and charter out) and accompanying notes as well as a note to brokers. The new charterparty form comprises three parts. Parts I and II comprise the main body of the form and Part III contains clauses for specific countries.

This commentary is not comprehensive as it is confined to the material new amendments not previously circulating in the market and focuses on Parts I and II of the new form. This commentary should be read in conjunction with INTERTANKO’s commentary on the SHELLVOY 5 which is published in A Guide to Tanker Charters, which remains on point in relation to many of the clauses in SHELLVOY 6.

Tanker Bills of Lading - A Practical Guide
This publication is complementary to the successful INTERTANKO publication ’A Guide to Tanker Charters’.

The new Guide:

  • Describes both law and practice regarding tanker bills of lading, including analysis and explanation of terms used in shipping and banking practice.
  • Seeks to deal clearly and concisely with some of the common misconceptions and problems that can be encountered with these important documents.
Published by INTERTANKO, it is the only specialised explanation of tanker bills of lading and contains practical advice for practical situations.

$100.00*/$150.00**

Guide to Tanker Charters
’A Guide to Tanker Charters’ is a successor to the well known volume ’Tanker Voyage Charters’ that INTERTANKO has published in the past. INTERTANKO is again indebted to its Documentary Committee for producing this practical guide. This edition was published in 2001 and goes well beyond the earlier works as it is the first time that a comprehensive approach has been taken to both time and voyage charterparties for tankers. This publication has become a standard source of reference for those that are regularly engaged in fixing tankers or resolving charterparty disputes.

From our Technical and Marine Operations

A Guide for correct entries in the Oil Record Book (Part 1 - Machinery space operations) - Revised February 2006
The US Coast Guard established in October 2001 the Oily Water Separation Systems Task Force to examine a wide range of issues relating to machinery and equipment used to manage oily bilge water on commercial vessels; and to develop recommendations for the maritime industry on how to reach its environmental goals and ensure compliance with MARPOL and the Clean Water Act.

As a follow-up action INTERTANKO’s Safety, Technical and Environmental Committee (ISTEC) has developed "A Guide for correct entries in the Oil Record Book (Part I - Machinery space operations)" to address the increasing problems of ships being detained and fined in the USA due to equipment malfunction, and also to aid management of ship oil-water separators in the engine room.

The Guide is available in printed format and is structured to facilitate integration in the document management system of any individual INTERTANKO member. It can also be used as a training tool for seafarers.

Guiding Principles to Emergency Management and Crisis Communications
INTERTANKO believe that it is essential that the industry responds quickly and effectively to an industry incident not only to minimise the risks of human life and damage to the environment, but also to ensure that all necessary steps are taken to protect the industry’s public image. These guiding principles have been produced to help the international shipping industry contribute to this objective. This publication is addressed to shipping companies although it should also be of interest to every stakeholder in the chain of responsibility who is aiming towards continuous improvement. Guiding principles such as these can only be recommendatory in nature, and users may need to adapt them to fit their particular need and circumstances. On this understanding, the guiding principles are intended to provide useful advice on why it is important to be prepared and what happens if you are not prepared. The publication includes a CD-Rom case study for training purposes.

Copy of the Guide and CD-ROM case study $90.00*/$125.00**

Worldscale - A Tanker Chartering Tool
This publication explains how the Worldscale system works. It will be essential reading to anyone new to the chartering departments of the shipping and oil companies, as well as for traders and shipbrokers. People who have been in the business for many years will also benefit from the comprehensive treatment of the issues and are certain to find points that they did not know about or comments that will be valuable in their chartering practice.
