A word from the Chairman

Stephen Van Dyck
"INTERTANKO has successfully coalesced around a dynamic, proactive strategy, encouraging its members and the industry in general to be up front and take the initiative in meeting the numerous challenges that they face."

I have spent the last three years as Chairman of INTERTANKO. It has been a privilege and a pleasure working with the tanker owners, our dedicated Secretariat and the tanker industry for the common good. This has been a time when our Association has grown, flourished, become stronger. During this time, our Members have witnessed three key achievements.

First, INTERTANKO has successfully coalesced around a dynamic, proactive strategy, encouraging its members and the industry in general to be up front and take the initiative in meeting the numerous challenges that they face. This strategy has been used to good effect in working on a number of key issues ranging from our encouraging open debate at the IMO on air emissions to action through the administrative court in the UK to seek clarification of the Ship Source Pollution Directive; from providing additional cadet berths on members’ ships to actively supporting the IMO’s voluntary flag state audit; from the interim strategy on ship recycling to the use of alternative antifoulings before ratification of the international regulations.

Second, INTERTANKO has been continuously improving the way it works and in the way it manages itself. It has a clearer mission, vision and goals, and an excellent, strong Executive Committee to implement the policies of its Council.

Third, as a direct result of its proactive strategy and its disciplined management, INTERTANKO has attracted new members, both large and small. Over the last three years deadweight in INTERTANKO has risen by one third and the number of ships by one fifth. In January 2004 we had 229 members with 2,198 tankers of 165m deadweight; as of January 2007 we have around 260 members with circa 2,650 tankers of over 200m dwt. In 2006 alone we gained 20 new full members with 181 tankers totalling 14.2m dwt. This membership represents all parts of the world.

All three achievements have combined to broaden and strengthen INTERTANKO’s worldwide influence and the respect in which it is held, both inside and outside the industry.

These accomplishments are the result of the hard work of our responsible and committed members and a very professional secretariat. INTERTANKO has a bright future.
