S-57 to S-100: Understanding Change; Preparing for Transition

The ECDIS S-100 standard, developed to overcome the limitations of its predecessor S-57, will provide multiple advantages skilled navigators and operators may use to improve safety of navigation, voyage planning and ship efficiency.
However, the new standards aren’t just about advantages and strengths, but also limitations and weaknesses which must be known to navigators.
This document, although focused on bridge teams and their watch officers, is intended to provide basic and preliminary information which could help those both onboard and ashore to prepare for the transition, helping to understand and manage the change.
