INTERTANKO recognises that a nation, state or province
may bring criminal charges following an accident. In these cases, INTERTANKO
expects the due process of law to be expedited in a timely fashion, with full
access to legal counsel for the captain and the crew of the vessel(s)
involved.
The Association calls on all nations to handle marine accidents
in conformity with the international conventions governing marine transportation
and oil spill liability. Most states have ratified these conventions and
implemented them in national law.
INTERTANKO expects its members owning
or operating vessels involved in an accident or oil spill incident to cooperate
fully with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the accident.
