INTERTANKO supports the Australian Marine Environment Protection Association (AUSMEPA) with a national poster competition

INTERTANKO has supported a safer-ships poster contest amongst Australian school children together with the Australian Marine Environment Protection Association (AUSMEPA) to raise awareness of the state of our marine environment and to ensure its lasting survival through education and action by ocean users and communities.

AUSMEPA was officially launched in July 2000 and has a common goal with all MEPA’s around the world - that is to help the new generation of citizens understand, protect, enjoy and prosper from a healthy, clean, useful marine environment.  The United Nations has endorsed the MEPA idea and recognises the importance of young people’s effort to save the world’s oceans from pollution.

The initiative for the poster competition came from INTERTANKO and was timed to coincide with the INTERTANKO Sydney Tanker Event 22-25 April 2001.

Contestants were asked to write a 100-word description of ship safety features to accompany each poster.

Lizzie Stringer, 11-years old, from Star of the Sear Catholic School, Hervey Bay, Queensland won the competition and was flown together with her parents to an award ceremony at the Sheraton on the Park Hotel in Sydney on 23 April.

The Chairman of INTERTANKO, Mr Westye Hoegh and the Chairman of AUSMEPA, Captain Michael Alexander presented the award during a luncheon with AUSMEPA Executive Director, Greg McGarvie and INTERTANKO members attending the Sydney Tanker Event.  At the award ceremony, Westye Hoegh congratulated Lizzie saying that “her entry best reflected ideas for a future ship design that would protect our seas.”

Lizzie toured the INTERTANKO Exhibition at the Sheraton on the Park Hotel, visited a state of the art tanker and the Sydney Maritime Museum. With the award also comes a 12-month membership of AUSMEPA for Lizzie’s school.

“Through sponsorship of this competition and support of AUSMEPA’s aims, INTERTANKO has demonstrated as part of a global maritime community commitment towards a safer and cleaner future for the world’s children,” said Captain Alexander, Chairman of AUSMEPA.
