    USCG’s Chemical Transportation Advisory Committee meets

    Panama Canal Tanker Inspection Programme

    The Panama Canal Authority has issued Advisory 9-2004 reminding Canal users of the Tanker Inspection Programme. A tanker is selected for inspection based on factors such as the chemical and physical properties of its cargo, historical performance during previous transits, the age of the tanker, and whether it is single or double hull.     2003 tanker recycling at 2002 level

    According to our records, 222 tankers and combined carriers totalling 19.1 million dwt were reported sold for recycling in 2003, which was about the same dwt level as in 2002 when 181 tankers of 19.6 million dwt were recycled.     IEA raises 2004 oil demand growth forecast

    The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Oil Market Report for March 2004 increases its world oil demand growth forecast for 2004 again, this time by 0.22 mbd to a growth of 1.65 mbd for the year. World oil demand for 2004 is estimated at 80.2 mbd, which is 2.1% up from 2003. Surging oil demand in China and other non-OECD Asian economies accounts for the increased estimate.
