U.K. Members Seminar discusses non-compliance

INTERTANKO and INTERCARGO UK-based members attended a luncheon seminar hosted on 1 June by LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae at their offices in London. Presentations were made by Austin P. Olney, and Paul Q. Wathcman, both Partners at the firm. Their presentation “Turning Compliance Risk to Competitive Advantage,” can be viewed here. It outlines the challenges facing the shipping industry, as the global tightening of environmental standards gains momentum, enforcement risk escalates, and regulators put a high cost on non-compliance.

Speaking from his experience after handling over a dozen enforcement MARPOL cases for a wide variety of fleets, Olney discussed the root causes of non-compliance, both on ships and on shore, and provided advice and guidance on the following aspects: engineering solutions; management solutions; manning and training solutions. He discussed how shipping companies can develop these solutions into best practices, thereby reducing risks and in return, opening up to new opportunities and enhancing competitive advantage.
