Poseidon Challenge - new website, new publication and new Award

This week sees the publication of the full report of the second Poseidon Challenge Day in Houston earlier this year. This was a stimulating day with updates on commitments made by heads of industry sectors in 2006 at the first Poseidon Challenge Day in Singapore, and with new commitments to continuous improvement and cooperation as more people aim for the zero goals of the Poseidon Challenge – zero fatalities, zero pollution, zero detentions.

All INTERTANKO Members and Associate Members have been mailed a copy. More copies will be mailed to a fuller list of press, politicians, regulators as well as to other industry players.

The Poseidon Challenge is broadening out to include all sectors of the maritime industry. In order to reflect this broadening and to reach out to as wide an audience as possible, we have recently set up a new website specifically for the Poseidon Challenge. Please do take a look at and encourage your colleagues to do the same.

As we advised you earlier this year, a Poseidon Challenge Award has been created to recognise outstanding accomplishments in continuous improvement in the maritime industry. The criteria and procedures have been officially endorsed by INTERTANKO’s Executive Committee and the judging panel has been formed. The judging panel will consist of five members: Nicholas Fistes, Chairman of INTERTANKO; Chris Horrocks, former Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping; Thimio Mitropoulos, IMO Secretary General; Thomas Tay, General Secretary for the Singapore Maritime Officers' Union; Stephen Van Dyck, Chairman of the Poseidon Challenge.

The first Poseidon Challenge Award will be presented at INTERTANKO’s next Tanker Event scheduled to take place in April 2008 in Istanbul, Turkey. An award applicant can be any company, division within a company or individual within a company that is involved in any sector of the maritime industry.

Nominations are now invited and should be submitted no later than 1 January 2008.

Please consider entering for the Poseidon Challenge Award. Full details including nomination and selection criteria can be found on the Poseidon Challenge website
