Istanbul Tanker Event 2008 – update on speakers

INTERTANKO's first Annual Tanker Event in Turkey will be a THE Tanker Event of the year in the cosmopolitan surroundings of Istanbul, with the very hospitable Turkish Maritime Community helping us with the planning.

"Turkey has experienced major developments and has a well-established shipping industry offering many possibilities and a professional business environment. We are very pleased to have the INTERTANKO Tanker Event 2008 in Turkey and welcome the shipping world to Istanbul," says Suay Umut, President of Dunya Denizcilik Ve Ticaret (a member of INTERTANKO's Executive Committee).

This event is bound to attract people due to its strategic location linking the Mediterranean with Russia and the Middle East. Sergey Burima, General Manager of Sovcomflot, adds, "We are delighted that INTERTANKO is holding its annual meeting in one of the key strategic gateways for Russian oil exports. We look forward to seeing everyone there."

The official opening of the event on Tuesday will be done by His Excellency Binali Yildirim, Minister of Transportation of the Government of the Republic of Turkey; followed by presentations from our distinguished guests Metin Kalkavan, Chairman of the Turkish Chamber of Shipping; Suay Umut, President of Dunya Denizcilik Ve Ticaret; Mohammad Souri, Chairman of the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC).

The Poseidon Challenge on Tuesday afternoon will focus on the human element with new commitments, updates on previous commitments and commitments from the floor. Main speakers include Tor E. Svensen (IACS Chairman), Willem De Ruiter (EMSA), Nicky Pappadakis (INTERCARGO Chairman), Nick Efthymiou (Union of Greek Shipowners Chairman - invited).

The Poseidon Challenge Workshop session on Wednesday morning will look more like a workshop and will focus on how people can get Poseidon Challenge/Continuous Improvement actually working in their company (like a toolbox session). Main speakers for this will be Jens Rolfsen from DNV and Poseidon Challenge Vice Chairman, Emmanuel Vordonis.

The Poseidon Challenge Award presentation will take place at the end of the Tuesday session, just before the Annual Dinner. We have fifteen nominations for the award, which have been submitted to the judges for their determination.

The Oil and Tanker Market session will see presentations from top analysts: Erik Andersen, Research Director, RS Platou Shipbrokers AS; Henry Curra, Head of Research, ACM Shipping Ltd; Tina Gilje, researcher, Inge Steensland AS; Capt. Kjell Landin, Marine Manager - EBU M&T, Chevron; David Martin, Oil Market Analyst - Oil Industry and Markets Division, International Energy Agency (IEA); David Saginaw, Commercial Director, McQuilling Services Inc (to be confirmed).
