International Salvage Union (ISU) to hold a Tanker Spill Exercise in London

The International Salvage Union (ISU) will include a Tanker Spill Exercise in its Associate Members’ Day in London on Wednesday 2 April.

Robin Middleton, the former UK SOSREP (Secretary of State’s Representative), will act as co-ordinator, together with PR/Crisis Consultant Tony Redding, for an exercise based upon a chemical tanker suffering a casualty in the English Channel and running aground off the coast of Alderney in the Channel Islands.

There will be six teams, representing the Command & Control, Salvors, Shipowners & Insurers, Surveyors & Experts, Media Interests, Legal Representatives. Attendees will be invited to participate in the exercise as members of the team most closely associated with their normal role. Team Leaders will be identified prior to the day.

During the morning seminar prior to this exercise, Hugh Shaw, the U.K.’s newly appointed SOSREP, will talk about his role in casualty response in U.K. waters.

In addition, John Reeder QC, the Lloyd’s Appeal Arbitrator, will talk about the significance of the Lloyd's Open Form of Salvage Agreement (LOF) in the 21st Century for shipowners and salvors, and Arnold Witte, the President of the ISU, will talk about the relevance of LOF in terms of protection of the environment.

This year is the 100th Anniversary of the Lloyd’s Form, and the Associate Members’ Day programme will also include a review of matters relating to the it, and other matters arising during 2007, as well as an introduction to the new ISU Website which has been set up to provide an explanation of the working of LOF 2000 for the benefit of those not familiar with the agreement.

At the conclusion of the day there will be a Cocktail Reception hosted by Smit Internationale NV in London’s Guildhall, which is open to all those attending the Associate Members’ Day.

We would actively encourage members to send a representative to be part of the shipowners’/insurers’ table at this Tanker Spill Exercise.
