Round Table CEOs speak at Asian Shipowners' Forum

INTERTANKO’s Managing Director, Dr. Peter Swift, this week joined with fellow CEOs of the Round Table of international shipping associations in presenting the Association's key issues to the Chairmen and Secretary Generals of the Asian Shipowners Forum (ASF) at their Annual General Meeting held on Hainan Island, China.

The presentation of the Round Table CEOs (BIMCO’s Robert Lorenz-Meyer, ICS’s Tony Mason, INTERCARGO’s Roger Holt and INTERTANKO’s Peter Swift) encompassed four main themes on which the Round Table associations are coordinating efforts:

1) Safety and Quality in the Industry

2) The Key Environmental Challenges

3) The People Challenge

4) Global Governance.

INTERTANKO and its fellow Round Table representatives were honoured to be able to discuss these key issues with the ASF members during the course of the two-day meeting. Interaction between the RT and ASF is of growing importance, particularly when regional and local issues around the world are having a substantial impact on Asian-based shipping companies. This was exemplified by the outcome of the ASF meeting concerning the possibility of an NGO status at the IMO for the ASF secretariat. Furthermore, the ASF are also acting on internationally important issues such as pilotage.

The Asian Shipowners Forum recently established a permanent secretariat based in Singapore. The ASF itself is comprised of Asian ship owner associations from Australia, China, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
