INTERTANKO visits Secretary General of Greece’s Mercantile Marine Ministry

Professor John Tzoannos, Secretary General of Greece’s Ministry of Mercantile Marine, met this week in Athens with INTERTANKO’s Chairman Nicholas Fistes and its Managing Director Dr Peter Swift.

They enjoyed a wide-ranging discussion on several of the current issues affecting international shipping , ranging from environmental concerns to legislative developments. Inter alia INTERTANKO expressed to Professor Tzoannos the gratitude of international tanker owners for the enormous support that Greece has provided to the EU naval forces that are protecting the international shipping trading through the Gulf of Aden and off Somalia’s coast.

The leadership that Greece has demonstrated has been an important factor in the effectiveness of the EU naval forces in helping to suppress piracy in this region,” said Dr Swift.

While its main concern is over the well-being of its seafarers, INTERTANKO also wanted to highlight the strategic importance of the sea lanes running through the Gulf of Aden for the free movement of oil and energy resources.
