Sailors’ Society Second Dragon Boat Challenge 2009 - invitation to all

In 2007 this dragon boat racing event was held for the first time at Dorney Lake with 27 participating companies including BP Shipping, BP Humble, Cargill, Clyde & Co, Clarksons, Freight Investor Services, Inchcape Shipping Services, INTERTANKO, Maersk, Marine Accident Investigation Branch, Morgan Stanley, Noble Europe Ltd, Red Funnel, Rio Tinto Marine, Steamship, The Baltic Exchange, Thomas Miller UK P&I Club, Thurlestone Shipping, Tradewinds with Ince & Co and Clyde & Co.

The Dragon Boat Challenge is run on alternative years to the Three Peaks Challenge and the 2009 event will be held on Saturday 27 June at Dorney Lake, Eton, the chosen facility for the 2012 Olympics.

2007 saw a hotly contested final with only two seconds separating the first three teams. Freight derivative specialist FIS pipped the two Cargill crews to second and third place.

Morgan Stanley’s ‘Blazing Paddles’ and BP Shipping’s ‘Parrots of the Caribbean’ were joint winners of the unofficial Tradewinds best-name award.

The event is a great opportunity for team building for clients, colleagues and family. Once again the Society is looking for teams of 10 rowers plus one drummer. There are plenty of other activities to keep you entertained throughout the day including a tug-of-war competition which will be scheduled to run in between the Dragon Boat races. There will be additional activities including human table football, laser clays and target golf. For children there will be activities including a bouncy castle, entertainer, face painter and the opportunity to race some smaller bell boats.

The team sponsorship for 2009 has not been increased and we are again asking participants to raise £3,000 per team. This includes coffee and bacon rolls on arrival along with a BBQ lunch for all the team.  Each team will also receive an additional 11 guest passes for free to bring along colleagues, friends and family.

Teams already signed up for the 2009 event include Cargill, London Offshore Consultants, Rio Tinto, the marine travel company (sic), Freight Investor Services (FIS), Thomas Millar, The Baltic Exchange, INTERTANKO and Clarksons.

There are also sponsorship opportunities available for companies, including sponsoring a boat or paddles. Please ask for further details if you are interested.

In 2007 sponsorship contribution and team sponsorship raised over £90,000 net income for the Society, an amazing amount. Please join us again to make a real difference to the work of this Charity and to seafarers worldwide.
