INTERTANKO 40th Anniversary

INTERTANKO celebrated its 40th Anniversary this week in London with a wonderful dinner in the Royal Courts of Justice attended by over 400 Members, Associate Members and distinguished guests including five former Chairmen.

Guest of Honour was Thimio Mitropoulos, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, who praised INTERTANKO for its “sustained success in making the industry progressively and measurably safer” and for being instrumental in safeguarding the lives of seafarers.

In the IMO’s Year of the Seafarer, he emphasised that the world could not function without shipping and that shipping could not function without seafarers – “With 1.5 million seafarers and 6.5bn people worldwide, never before have so many people owed so much to so few.

The Association’s Chairman Capt Graham Westgarth considered INTERTANKO’s greatest achievements over 40 years and then looked ahead, urging the tanker industry to see the challenges that face us as opportunities. He praised proactive environmental initiatives such as the Virtual Arrival project, encouraged more action in the battle against piracy as the danger area extends into the Indian Ocean, and looked for more achievement in reducing the threat of criminalisation.

Lastly he urged the industry to reach out to other stakeholders, to find areas of common agreement and to act with greater unity, “speaking with one clear voice that can be clearly heard worldwide and which will command attention and respect.”
