INTERTANKO's Spanish Members meet in Madrid

This week's seminar for INTERTANKO's Spanish Members in Madrid heard some lively discussions on the pertinent regional and international issues facing ship owners today. The event was well attended by Members and included a representative from the Spanish Ministry of Transport, Alfredo de la Torre, Deputy Director for Ship Inspections.

INTERTANKO's Managing Director, Dr Peter Swift, explained INTERTANKO's approach to delivering the best environmental performance for shipping; its engagement in establishing and maintaining an international framework of consistent regulations and standards; its work to ensure the welfare and well-being of ships' crew; and its efforts and initiatives to meet the challenges of piracy. He also addressed the issue of recruitment, training and retention to ensure the availability of good people, which he said was both a quantity and quality challenge for the industry.

Following on from the discussion on recruitment, INTERTANKO's Regional Manager for Spain, Sally Woulfe, introduced the Maritime Industry Knowledge Centre web resource. She explained that this was an industry awareness and careers outreach programme developed to reach out to people who know little about shipping.
