Maritime Saudi Arabia 2010 held in Jeddah

The second Saudi Arabian Maritime Forum attracted more than 500 local and international delegates to Jeddah this week.

After an introductory summary of the global financial crisis and its impact on global maritime businesses and Saudi and regional companies, the other sessions concentrated mostly on shipping and port issues with considerable attention to local oil and petrochemical interests.

INTERTANKO's Managing Director Dr Peter Swift spoke in an opening session on tankers, highlighting the role and work of INTERTANKO, the performance record of the tanker industry and the key issues faced by the industry - in particular the many environmental challenges.

He concluded with an overview of the fundamentals of the tanker markets and also referred to the excess shipbuilding capacity that is the legacy of the recent ordering boom. (Click here for his presentation).

Swift also chaired a session on “Oil and Gas Shipping and Offshore Marine” which featured Saudi shipowners' activities in the international and domestic energy businesses.
