Seminar on Challenges for International Shipping in the Year of the Seafarer

You are warmly invited to attend our seminar addressing 'Challenges for International Shipping in the Year of the Seafarer' on 18 November 2010 in Vancouver. This event, organised by ITOPF, INTERTANKO, OCIMF, Teekay and NAMEPA, coincides with World Maritime Day in North America and is supported by Transport Canada.

The seminar follows two main themes: in the morning the focus is upon 'Preparedness, Partnerships and People', and in the afternoon the focus is on the 'Year of the Seafarer'.

The rare line-up of prominent industry and government speakers includes:

  • Canada's Deputy Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Yaprak Baltacioglu
  • Teekay's President and CEO, Bjorn Moller,
  • President, Teekay Marine Services and Chairman, INTERTANKO, Capt Graham Westgarth
  • INTERTANKO's Managing Director, Dr Peter Swift
  • OCIMF Director, David Cotterell
  • USCG Deputy Commander Atlantic Area and Defense Force East, RADM James Watson
  • Head of Policy & Planning Unit, Office of Secretary General of the IMO, Jo Espinoza-Ferrey

The seminar is free of charge but, since numbers are limited, we urge you to register as soon as possible to secure a place and, in any event, to register by 12 November. We anticipate that the audience will be comprised primarily of professionals from the shipping and oil industry, government and environmental agencies, lawyers and correspondents.

Please pass this invitation to others who may be keen to attend.

The evening before, you are invited to attend the first ever performance of the new Anthem to the Seafarer during a service honouring the seafarer in Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver at 19:30 on 17 November. The anthem was commissioned by the Baltic Exchange, and will be performed by the Christ Church Cathedral Choir under the direction of Rupert Lang. The service forms part of the World Maritime Day Observance recognising the IMO's Year of the Seafarer, and will pay tribute to seafarers who contribute tirelessly to world trade on the ships which transport over 90% of the world's goods.

All are welcome for dessert and coffee in the Undercroft straight after the service.

The Cathedral is within walking distance from the hotel.

We look forward to seeing you in Vancouver!
