Report of the 45th session of the GESAMP/EHS Working Group on the Evaluation of the Hazards of Harmful Substances Carried by Ships (EHS 45/9)

The forty-fifth session of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Working Group of the Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP) on the Evaluation of the Hazards of Harmful Substances Carried by Ships (EHS 45) was held this week at the IMO’s headquarters in London.

 

The working group discussed, amongst other things, eight new substances which had been submitted by the industry for evaluation; cleaning additive components where, in accordance with MEPC.1/Circ.590 (Revised tank cleaning additives guidance note and reporting form), only a shortened hazard profile is required for each component.

 

It also discussed matters of relevance to its work arising from the following meetings:

  • the thirteenth intersessional meeting of the Working Group on the Evaluation of Safety and Pollution Hazards of Chemicals (ESPH 13) which met from 22 to 26 October 2007
  • the Evaluation of Safety and Pollution Hazards (ESPH) Working Group meeting 5/6 February 2008 during BLG 12
  • the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) whose fifty-sixth session ran from 9 to 13 July 2007
  • the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) whose fifty-seventh session ran from 31 March to 4 April 2008.
