Electronic means to control oil discharges from ships?

The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee 56th session (MEPC 56) agreed with the request from the Dominican Republic to consider amending MARPOL Annex I to require electronic means to control oil discharges from ships.

The purpose of the proposal is to address the perceived international problem of illegal discharges of waste oil through amendments to regulations 17 and 36 of MARPOL Annex I to supplement, and possibly to replace parts of the Oil Record Book with an electronic oil discharge monitoring system (EODMS).

The matter was delegated to the Design and Equipment (DE) Sub-committee’s work programme as “Electronic means to control oil discharges from ships” with a target completion date of 2009.
