INTERTANKO lobbies against abuse from pilots in the Suez Canal

INTERTANKO has over the years had a number of different experiences, as reported by members, in direct contact with the Suez Canal Authority (SCA). The issues related to officials demanding “gifts” were particularly active during the period 2000 to 2002. The correspondence was brought to a close with the SCA expressing that it would “spare no effort to work out any problem that may fact (affect?) the vessels transiting the Canal”.

INTERTANKO was subsequently disappointed to learn that one member had experienced highly abusive treatment by a named Suez Canal pilot. Not only did he refuse to carry out his duties onboard; he also compromised the vessel’s safety, and finally left the ship with a tremendous load of demanded “gifts”.

INTERTANKO will continue to follow this matter up and will keep members informed.
