Lost Time Indicator (LTI) Benchmarking System launched for INTERTANKO members

Benchmarking has long been recognised as an important tool for INTERTANKO as it strives for continuous improvement. With the aid of benchmarking our members are able to identify where improvement is required by understanding their performance relative to others in the industry.

In 2005, following the work of the Vetting Committee, INTERTANKO launched the Tanker Management and Self-Assessment (TMSA) Benchmarking Tool, which has been successfully used by almost a third of the membership.

INTERTANKO has now set up the Lost Time Indicator (LTI) Benchmarking System in order to provide members with a useful tool for benchmarking themselves against other INTERTANKO members in a confidential manner.

The system enables members to compare their Lost Time Injury Frequency (LTIF) as well as Total Recordable Case Frequency (TRCF), which have been described by the Oil Companies' International Marine Forum (OCIMF) in its Marine Injury Reporting Guidelines.

Once a member enters its data, the LTIF and TRCF are calculated, sorted from low to high and two bar graphs are generated. The averages of the pool are depicted with a dotted line.

This way of displaying the results enables members not only to know whether they are below or above average (dotted lines), but also to know their position vis-à-vis other members in the pool (i.e. ranking). A sample plot can be seen in Figure 1.
