New crew visa requirement for Australia

The Australian Government is introducing a new visa for foreign crew of non-military ships - the Maritime Crew Visa (MCV).


Subject to legislation being passed, the MCV is expected to commence from 1 July 2007. From this time foreign crew will be expected to apply for and hold an MCV for their lawful arrival in Australia. Importantly, a six-month transition period will apply from 1 July to 31 December 2007. During this time foreign crew that arrive without an MCV will remain eligible for the grant of the existing Special Purpose visa provided they hold the required documentation. In this context the MCV will be mandatory from 1 January 2008.
