Wage discussions between employers (SINDOP) and employees (Stevedores Union) have been going on for some time.  The employees claim that a wage rise has been overdue for 5 years, and it is claimed that this has been deliberately thwarted by employers, led by the grain cargo operators.

Lengthy negotiations without any results have led to a “work-to-rule” action by the employees beginning on 18 September 2000, which will affect all types of vessels 24 hours daily.  A Union director said that this time their intentions were to play hard.  If an agreement was not reached soon, further stoppages in port operations would follow.
