MARINE SYMPOSIUM 2000 - CHENNAI, INDIA

INTERTANKO participated in a grand gathering of the Indian maritime industry last week when the Institute of Marine Engineers held its quadrennial Marine Symposium in Chennai.

Co-organised by Sanmar Shipping Ltd, the Symposium managed to cover a number of important issues pertinent to tanker owners in the new millennium. In particular the effect of Erika legislation on tanker operations, presented by INTERTANKO, the current state of IMO legislation in the wake of Erika, presented by Steamship Mutual, the pool market concept, presented by Torvild Klaveness, bunker delivery sampling point, presented by DNVPS, and bunker purchasing, presented by ExxonMobil Singapore. Although these were the more tanker based issues, other pertinent matters on the agenda related to ballast water exchange, presented by Indian Register of Shipping, and marine coatings (ballast water coating and TBT alternatives).

With over 400 delegates from around India, and indeed from around the world, the Symposium allowed for in depth discussion on all the issues and their implications on the Indian marine sector and maritime market. At present the general feeling from the delegates was one of optimism and continued growth in trade for Indian owners and operators.
