INCIDENT ALERT – Tanker accidents in Novorossiysk

As reported in Weekly NEWS No. 07 of 16 February 2001, the port authorities of Novorossiysk denied RMPA organised pilots the right to continue providing pilot services after 14 February 2001.  The decision was enforced as planned.  As previously claimed by RMPA this is an unlawful action, which has been admitted as such by the Deputy Minister of Transport.

RMPA reports that on 26 February two accidents involving tankers occurred in the port of Novorossiysk.  At this stage, details are not known.  INTERTANKO advises its members to take appropriate precautionary measures if calling at this port.

In addition, INTERTANKO suggests that members whose vessels are calling at Novorossiysk request their Masters to issue reports. These should be sent to Captain Steinar Digre by fax +47 22 12 26 41 or e-mail PortsandTerminals@intertanko.com.
