NEW YORK STATE PROPOSES BALLAST WATER STERILIZATION

Amendments to the New York State environmental law have been proposed which could make it illegal to operate ships in the State’s waters if they do not sterilise their ballast water and sediments. Ballast water acquired outside the waters of the state will have to treat their ballast by either filtration, thermal methods, UV light, biocides, or other technical means.

At present the amendments will involve the acquisition of permits and the requirement of the state to certify all the various treatment technologies being developed.

INTERTANKO is opposing the proposed law noting that due consideration should be given to the US Coast Guard’s ballast water requirements and further work being carried out on an International level.
