PORT COSTS

Canada/The Seaway – cost sharing

COST SHARING FOR AIS:

Agreements have been reached with the Canadian Shipowners Association and The Shipping federation of Canada to share the cost of the implementation of an IMO compliant Automatic Identification System (AIS).

The total cost of the implementation of the AIS is shared equally between the Seaway entities and the ship owners.  The ship owners’ contribution is CAD 0.005/GT, and applies for each of the following four segments of the Seaway transit:

1/ Up bound Montreal/Lake Ontario Section.

2/ Down bound Montreal/Lake Ontario Section.

3/ Up bound Welland Canal.

4/ Down bound Welland Canal.

This mandatory contribution that started 01 May 2000, is in place until the end of the 2001 navigation season.

All ships are required to pay this levy even if they are not equipped with AIS.  The maximum annual contribution per ship is CAD 5,000.

The system will be operational 01 July 2001.  The Seaway entities will make the carriage of AIS within their water mandatory for the 2002 navigation season.

COST SHARING FOR SEAWAY DRAUGHT STUDY (ship squat measurements) FOR OCEAN SHIPS ONLY:

Agreement has been reached with The Shipping Federation of Canada to recover the Ocean Trade’s share of the above mentioned study by increasing the amount collected for AIS from CAD 0.006/GT to CAD 0.0092/GT for the 2001 navigation season.  This increase will start at the opening of navigation season.
