INTERTANKO has recorded 42 tanker incidents worldwide in the first half 2001 and has analysed i.a. age, class, flag, fatalities and type of incidents.

INTERTANKO has recorded 42 tanker incidents worldwide with an average size of 74,000 dwt during the first half 2001. The average age was 16.7 years of which 3 were built in the 1960s, 13 in the 1970s, 5 in the 1980s, and 16 in the 1990s or later.

Vessels from several classification societies were involved in these incidents, 8 LR; 6 DnV; 5 ABS and 7 with NK Class. Regarding flag, the Norwegian flag tops the list with 5 incidents, Panama with 4, USA, Greece and Liberia 3 incidents whilst Singapore flags have been reported to be involved in 2 incidents.

We also have limited information on the time of the day the incidents occurred but 6 incidents have been reported to be early in the morning between 0300 hours and 0700 hours.

We have records of some 41 fatalities in connection with the incidents. There are reports of pollution in connection with 12 of the incidents, the biggest being some 1,500 tonnes of heavy fuel oil from the Baltic Carrier that collided outside Denmark. 3 of the incidents involve bunker spills and 3 chemicals.

Looking at the type of incidents INTERTANKO has recorded 12 collisions, 11 fire/explosions, 9 groundings. 5 structural/technical problems and 1 hijacking. The actual causes are difficult to analyse at this stage due to limited information. Unfortunately, in general statistics from accidents appear to be a neglected area in shipping.

Fishing vessels were involved in 4 of the collisions, 3 maybe related to bad weather. Steering problems were reported in 2 incidents and a navigational error was mentioned in another 2.

The most unusual accident included the wooden tanker Samta 3 that caught fire on 15 June just off Bedok in Singapore. One Indonesian crewman lost his life and the vessel sank.
