INTERTANKO's Asia Representative Minerva Alfonso spoke at the International Conference on the Straits of Malacca held in Penang, Malaysia last week. The conference was attended by over 150 participants from the public and private sector including scientists, academics, policy makers and environmentalists from the region.

The event was organised by the Malacca Straits Research and Development Centre, Japan International Cooperation Agency, and the University of Science Malaysia in collaboration with the IMO Regional Programme, The Malaysian Department of Fisheries and The World Fish Centre - ICLARM. The conference, with the theme "Tropical Marine Environment: Charting Strategies for the Millennium", was officially opened by Penang's Head of State, His Excellency Tun Dato' Seri Haji Abdul Rahman Bin Abbas.

The INTERTANKO paper entitled "Sharing a Common Vision - is there a way forward"? focused on the importance of cooperation amongst all the parties involved in the movement of oil by sea as encapsulated in INTERTANKO's "Chain of Responsibility" programme. It explained why the unilateral approach of addressing issues is ineffective and counter-productive. The paper also discussed the Association's objectives and activities as well as its strong leadership role in the drive for improved standards.
