Strong support for Asian Regional Panel meeting in Tokyo

INTERTANKO’s Asian Regional Panel meeting under the chairmanship of Mr KH Koo, Chairman TCC Group, and Vice-chairmanship of Tamura-san, Iino Lines held a meeting in Tokyo on 27 February 2003. The meeting was kindly hosted by ClassNK and held at their head office, our thanks to them for their excellent support and assistance with the organisation of this meeting. Some 30 senior executives from the Association’s members in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore participated in the meeting.

Presentations from ClassNK were given by Dr Yoneya on PrimeShipHull and Matsui-san on CAP/CAS. A discussion on piracy and security was lead by a presentation from Mr Alan Chan, Petroships Pte. Ltd. Thanks also go to our speakers for their informative presentations.

The Association’s Managing Director, Dr Swift updated the panel on forthcoming events including our Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. Dr Swift lead a lively discussion on the Prestige, highlighting the events surrounding the incident and the political aftermath, with the issue of the early phase out of single hull tankers covered in some depth. The issue of security was also covered with particular emphasis on the ramifications for trades to the US.

INTERTANKO’s Regional Manager for Asia-Pacific, Mr John Fawcett-Ellis updated the panel on recent activity from the Singapore office and emphasised the increased role of the office that was now able to advise members in the region on legal and chartering issues. He highlighted certain major issues that the Association’s Insurance and Documentary Committees had been engaged with including, the discussions over the revisions to the international oil spill and liability compensation regime and war risks cover. He also gave an overview of the Freight and Demurrage Information Pool and highlighted INTERTANKO’s model clauses developed by the Documentary Committee.

The Panel meeting was followed by a reception which was attended by some 45 senior executives from the tanker industry. This afforded our members a less formal setting in which to continue the discussions about the key issues which face the tanker industry today.

INTERTANKO places considerable focus on the Asia-Pacific region, forthcoming events planned include tanker chartering seminars, vetting seminars, and technical workshops. The Association will also attend the ICS Annual meeting in Japan in May.  In September a meeting with the Asian Shipbuilders and with Classification Societies is planned in Seoul. We are grateful to our members in this region for their support of the work of the Association.
