Nor-Shipping: ITOPF receives the Thor Heyerdahl Award

INTERTANKO congratulates ITOPF on winning the Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award.

The Award was presented to Managing Director Ian White by Mrs. Jacqueline Beer Heyerdahl at a ceremony in connection with Nor-Shipping in Oslo this week. Recognising ITOPF’s authority on response to accidental oil spills from ships, the Awarding Committee commended ITOPF on their outstanding example of knowledge management and knowledge sharing.

ITOPF was founded in 1968 following the TorreyCanyon accident, and has since attended more than 500 spills in 85 countries. However, despite recent high-profile incidents, Dr. White underlined the tremendous reduction in the number of oil spills from tankers in recent years and the fact that most of the spills are now minor. Over the last years, the organisation has witnessed an increasing trend in the number of bunker spills from other types of ships - which the media often wrongly attribute to the tanker industry.

The Award was launched by Thor Heyerdahl and the Norwegian Shipowners Association and presented for the first time to the Green Award Foundation in 1999. Current sponsors of the Award also include DNV, Gard Services and Skuld. The prize consists of USD 100,000 and a statuette by Norwegian artist Nico Widerberg.
