Farewell to Chairman Lars Carlsson at INTERTANKO’s Dubai Tanker Event

It has been an exciting week in Dubai for all those who attended INTERTANKO’s Dubai Tanker Event which ran from 28-31 March.

Executive Committee and Council meetings, the Annual General Meeting and a variety of stimulating Open Sessions covering the Tanker Market, the Middle East markets, human error, pollution preparedness and incident management kept the 350 delegates busy to the end, not to mention a variety of superb and relaxed evenings at the Emirates Golf Club, the stunning Burj Al Arab and an unforgettable evening in the desert at a Bedoiun Camp arrived at in a fleet of four wheel drive cars over the sand.

The assembled members and guests said farewell to Chairman Lars Carlsson who has served three years in the post. Carlsson was praised and thanked for his tireless work to further the aims of INTERTANKO right round the world.

His putting theory into practice was lauded by Dr. Martin Stopford, managing director of Clarkson Research who invented the ‘Practising Economist Accolade’ for the occasion. According to economists, says Stopford, a tanker owner gets paid for a) being in the right place at the right time (both ship positioning in the short term and investment in the longer term); b) reducing the cost of transport below his competitors, making more money than they do even in a bad market; c) improving his service over what his competitors can offer. Lars Carlsson has achieved all of these, he said.

Carlsson, acknowledging the unstinting support he has received from his wife Christina, sends this message to all INTERTANKO members, associate members and staff:

Dear  Intertanko Friends,

On my retirement as INTERTANKO chairman, I would like to express my most sincere thanks to you all for your support and encouragement during my three years as chairman of INTERTANKO.  Nobody knows more about tankers than we in Intertanko do - together.

It has been a wonderful time and I have enjoyed every minute of it.

As I was appointed  an  honourary member  of INTERTANKO by the AGM, I will take the opportunity to continue to take part in some activities and I very much look forward to seeing you all again.

Christina and I wish you all,  and your new Chairman Mr Stephen Van Dyck, every success in your endeavours to further increase the good INTERTANKO influence and make our tanker world an even better one.

Lars and Christina Carlsson
